this is a positive move, as is the Facebook ban, but will any of these companies understand their lack of action long ago helped yesterday happen? will there be self-examination?
these moves are months late, and not until "it got real" in very sad ways. https://twitter.com/loudmouthjulia/status/1347235090527608832

as someone who's been arguing for -- literally -- more than 2 decades online social sites need to manage and police their content, hopefully yesterday becomes the day they realize they actually have to.
but I'm not hopeful. It's hard, and it doesn't scale.

but to be blunt about it, we have decades of experience that shows that NO online environment that gets any scale avoids the negative and destructive groups adopting it for their purposes: unless you fight to keep them out.
I mean, seriously. We learned that the hard way with USENET. And it feels like every social system design team ignores the past and goes on to re-invent the same problems over and over again.
And that directly led to yesterday.
And that directly led to yesterday.
I have long argued that online social systems are like local bars, where groups get together to interact and talk about common interests.
But know what happens to a local bar when the bikers show up? you either kick them out, or you are now a biker bar.
