Doctors, this one is for you (a thread):

I had a telephone appointment today with my GP today regarding some low iron levels and sleep changes. We discussed testing, symptoms, and next steps. She then paused, and asked about how I am coping with news and current events.
I told her that yes, things are not as stressful as it could be; I have a part time job that pays well and is apparently pandemic-proof, and I am in grad school, a privilege that most don't have. I have a safe home and a loving partner and consistent delicious food in my fridge.
I have support in many ways that others do not. She then continued, outlining how important it is to get good sleep and eat food that is nourishing (particularly red meat in my case) and connect with people that I love.
She recommended not looking at the news and making sure that I take care of my mental health as well as my physical health. She referred me to a dietician and some blood work.
This holistic approach to medicine is what good bedside manner is: I was being seen as a person, and not just a body or an exaggerator.
Throughout this visit, I couldn't help but think about the emotional labour that goes into being a doctor - particularly a very good one - during these trying times. What must it be like to give care when many, including themselves, might be at the end of their rope.
Doctors: I see you, I appreciate you, and please take care of yourselves as much as you care for the people in your community. You're doing great work and what you do matters immensely.
