I think Mutahi Ngunyi is engaged in something disgraceful. The Kikuyu need not be boxed into a corner to back Raila Odinga for 2022. Those who want to back Odinga can do so without coercion, same as those who want to back William Ruto. 1/
The problem with Ngunyi’s rants against the Kikuyu masses seen to reject BBI (many who are legitimately confused/confounded by the Handshake) is that it attempts to replace their pathological fear of Raila Odinga by creating a new pathological fear of William Ruto. /2
There has to be a way of bringing enough Kikuyus to back Odinga, without resorting to mindless fearmongering. I am reminded that throughout Odinga’s presidential political career, there have been Kikuyus who’ve always backed him. Not many, but they’ve always been behind him. /3
If BBI is to achieve anything, in my view, it should end a type of politics that balkanizes one group as eternally opposed to one individual. This is because - and history bears me out - such a politics puts politicians in power, but at the expense of real national harmony. /4
I know much of our politics proceeds from paying lip service to the ideals we espouse. Ngunyi’s strategy is part of the reason selling BBI has faced this long opposition by a group that’s perhaps the document’s highest beneficiaries. I have one more thing to say... /5
I do not agree with the claim by pro-BBI Mt. Kenya backers that the rejection of BBI (if Kangata is correct) is because the people do not know what is in the document. The people obviously know what’s in the document. /6
The people of Mt. Kenya - in their heart of hearts - KNOW why they are riled and rebelling. The excuses are many. Economy being top, but these are just that, excuses! There’s a BIG ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. /7
Let me put it this way. President Uhuru, and the leaders of Mt. Kenya, must resolve the “Luo Question”. There has to be a “kikuyu consensus” on that question without which all these other things are total shenanigans. /8
In Central Kenya, BBI is stuck in what I refer to as “tribalism stalemate”. The only thing I can think of in history that comes close is that canonical conundrum in John 4:4-26 between Jesus and Photine (the woman at the well)...you can read it. /9
I conclude this way. 2022 will come and pass. Let those ready for it seize it. But make no mistake; it appears to me to be the most consequential election for anyone between the ages of 18 and 45.

As it comes, THINK DEEPLY. I’m out. /10
