I think today is a good day to have this conversation. There are myriad reasons why what happened yesterday happened, it's a compounding effect. But one I would like to particularly call attention to is this.
The press is an important tenet of democracy, and in the US it’s been wholly consumed by capitalism and monetization to the point that it’s a shell of what it’s supposed to be, and now we're paying the price.
When you paywall news and the truth, and good journalism, it's easier to make the press 'the bad guy' and news becomes inaccessible to those who don't have the financial means to pay for it.
What else happens? Free and accessible misinformation and conspiracy theories flourish. You end up with distinct groups of people living in wholly different realities, who can't even agree on basic truths or facts.
This has been a long time coming, but as long as news and the media continue to prioritize their financial bottom line over all else, it will only continue to get worse. If democracy is to continue, freedom of the press and accessibility of the press needs to be prioritized.
I would love to see more people talking about this because I've quite frankly seen no one talking about it at all. So if anyone knows of any resources, feel free to share!
