Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says "what happened yesterday was textbook terrorism,". She questions why security response was not nearly as strong as it was during BLM protests this summer. Says there needs to be an understanding of the "catastrophic failures," of yesterday
D.C.'s acting police chief says they've been circulating photos of rioters with local hotels, businesses, the FBI, and the airport authority, to track down the people photographed destroying the Capitol.
There have been 68 arrests related to the storming of the Capitol. Acting police chief says just one person in that group is from Washington D.C. Everyone else from elsewhere.
The Secretary of the Army is speaking now. He says for at least the next 30 days, there will be a 7 foot nonscalable wall put up around the Capitol.
Mayor Bowser describes what happened yesterday as a "failure," in terms of security. Says it was a failure, or else you wouldn't have had police lines breached and people breaking into the Capitol.
Mayor Bowser says the emergency order she issued (which lasts until the day after inauguration) is to give the people in D.C. a heads up they may have to take extraordinary measures to keep people safe. Cites yesterday's 6pm curfew as an example.
The Acting Police Chief says that 56 police officers were injured. One officer is still in hospital -- he was snatched into a crowd, beaten, and tased.
Mayor Bower says that she is obviously concerned about January 20th, when Joe Biden's inauguration will be held. But she poses a bigger question: "we as Americans have to ask ourselves, is this going to be the new normal in America?"
Mayor Bowser asks if this is the new normal, after Donald Trump is President. Are people going to be inspired to violence, to overthrow institutions, she asks.
