Worthwhile to think about these questions in light of coup talk. My own hesitancy about that discourse stems from Nikhil’s point that political organization is hard work, coups, successful ones, are hard work, and these people are lazy and not very bright. The danger is different https://twitter.com/nikhil_palsingh/status/1346958474555527170
I just think so much of what we saw yesterday is better understood within the context of right wing radicalization, peculiar American cultural forms, ingrained, structural racism, etc. — which is to say the ends are not as narrow as “successful coup d’etat”.
Yes they wanted to overturn an election. They wanted a coup. They also had no real idea how to do that. And yet they also want many other things, which they may well accomplish by the diffusion of the imagery, and depending on the reactions of those in power.
This is also why I am skeptical of the assertion that next time will be better organized, more successful. That’s not guaranteed, even if a “next time” is a likelihood. Doing more than they did yesterday appears beyond their capabilities & unnecessary to meet their desired ends.
