I’m still struggling with my words about yesterday. It was disgraceful and disturbing in so many ways. To see a man bearing Heathen symbols there turns my stomach. It’s embarrassing.
I was a freshman in college, still a newcomer to the Pagan community, when I attended my first (tiny) festival to meet others of like mind. It was at a UU church. Largely a wonderful time, but...
This was also the first time I realized white supremacists were among our numbers. The guy in charge of security enlisted a friend to help. This person had a symbol now associated with racism and hate tattooed on his head.
I will never forget how uncomfortable I was, how is scared guests, and how angry the organizers were. They made them leave.
We need to make them leave our spaces, but we have to do more to keep them from coming. We have to show more support to BIPOC Pagans, polytheists, witches, etc. We have to demonstrate anti racism everywhere: inside and outside Paganism.
And we have to hold ourselves and our organizations to a higher standard.
