Ya'll I'm listening to my daughter's 2nd Grade class discuss yesterdays events. After allowing the kids to share what they know about what happened, her teacher walked them through the definitions of "protest"; "riot"; "coup" and "insurrection". 1/4 a short 🧵
She explained that some people are calling what happened a protest. She reminded them of their #BlackLivesMatter discussion and people marching in the streets w/ signs and how there is a difference between that and when someone is intentionally inciting violence. 2/4
They also talked about what it feels like to lose a contest or competition and how we sometimes feel sad about that. And they all agreed that taking out those feelings on other people is NOT the answer. 3/4
I am so grateful for incredible educators and @BreckSchool for not shying away from tough discussions. I'm also incredibly impressed with the ability of 7 & 8 year olds to think critically and process this complex and tough issue. It leaves me hopeful for our future. 4/4
