Bhudevi is our eternal mother. She provides us with everything that is essential to survive on this planet. She carries fields, water bodies, mountains and forests. She is one of the forms of Devi Lakshmi, thus becomes consort of Vishnu.
The villages of India worship Grama-devis. The reason why feminine worship is still prominent in India, is this - the Grama-devi tradition! The villagers worship a face, and the entire village is considered as the body of the goddess.
Here, the ground or dharti, again turns into Goddess. Some say Grama-devi is Kali's manifestation, which ultimately means that Kali and Lakshmi can't be separated (like Vishnu and Shiva are one).
In ancient times (some people do this even now), people used to worship ground before putting their feet on Her, because she is our mother. We are compelled to touch Her with our feet.
