Since Jan. ‘19, the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has asked GOP voters if they identify more as supporter of President Trump or as a supporter of the Republican Party. In almost every poll, more Republicans identified as supporters of Trump than of the Republican Party. 1/5
In the final NBC/WSJ poll before the election (10/29-31/20), 54% of Rs said they identified with Trump, just 38% identified as a supporter of the GOP. Now compare that to the breakdown in Congressional vote Wed/Thurs on objections to electoral college 2/5
Of the 255 Rs in the House and Senate who voted on objections to Biden’s electoral college victory, 147 (57%) supported while 109 (42%), did not. 3/5
In other words, the breakdown in Congress looks almost identical to the breakdown among GOP voters; more than half of the Republicans in Congress were identifying themselves as part of the Trump party. Will this last forever? Well, according to NBC/WSJ data..4/5
Over the course of the last two years, the average % of R’s who identify as Trump supporters was 46.6%, those who IDd themselves as supporters of the party were 40%. In other words, there’s evidence that this allegiance to Trump is malleable. But, still solid. 5/5
