1/7 On "Loser's consent"

OK, I see a lot of RW accounts in the UK are tweeting about "Loser's consent" in relation to those who have opposed brexit. Leaving aside the irony that they should be doing so after events in Washington yesterday, let's nail this now.
2/7 In a democracy, following an election, it is normal that those who lose accept they have done so, and that the winners will form a government. This is the only thing that approaches the RW's current (underlined) concept of "Loser's Consent"
3/7 The Opposition is not immediately required to give up opposing and accept all the new govt's policies unopposed. In fact, that would be a denial of the most fundamental aspect of democracy.
4/7 In the case of a referendum, such as the 1975 UK European Communities Membership Referendum, the losers were not required to give up their belief that they were right to oppose membership, nor were they prevented from normal democratic campaigning against membership
5/7 The UK joined the European Communities following the Referendum. People were still opposed and many of them ares still around and campaigned for Leave. We have now left the EU, under the provisions of the 2016 referendum.
6/7 There is no "Loser's Consent" in these cases. Democracy requires that those who oppose are free continue to oppose and try, by democratic means, to reverse the result. Anyone who tries to argue anything else is clearly an anti -democrat and can shove it.
7/7 I'm annoyed at having to do this. I was supposed to be tweeting about running a whelk stall.

FIN.
