Travis Scott: from the trap, to a trap genius.
(a thread):
jumpstart:
2013 was an interesting year for travis.
after thinking he had lost everything, he was suddenly getting traction with his music. he produced songs with kanye west for yeezus. he released Owl Pharaoh and was a XXL freshman back when it meant something.
new heights:
in 2014 travis released Days Before Rodeo, a mixtape that anticipated the release of his first studio album. you can see the genius brewing on this. this would later go on to influence his contemporaries like logic, who sampled backyard for his song stainless on TITS
innovation:
in 2015, travis released what many consider to be the best trap album of all time. Rodeo. this album solidified his place as the best trap artist to ever grace music. while there are other contenders, they’re all in one lane and this album shows he can branch out.(1)
yeah sure, there was some club hits on Rodeo but one song that stands out a lot is 90210. this song allows travis to shine lyrically and musically. his idea to use actual drums was interesting as he doesn’t really go down that lane musically. it’s about how he’s handling fame(2)
purely mainstream:
in 2016 travis released Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight. this was quite evidently a shot at mainstream success and that’s fine. there’s a lot of bangers here. it gets a lot of flack with misunderstandings of the intentions behind this album. i think it’s cool.
artistic and commercial success:
ASTROWORLD was released in 2018. this is my personal favourite of his, because of its replay value, there’s songs with different moods. and the psychedelic sounds here are staggering; he’s in his element here as an artist and a hitmaker(1)
the production on this A1. it really does feel like a rollercoaster, which is what travis was going for (astroworld is the name of a theme park he’s been to). for example, who remembers hearing SICKO MODE for the first time, that was certainly an experience that i’ll remember.(2)
