It is of the utmost importance to his opponents that Trump be forced to leave office ahead of schedule. This has been the explicit goal all along. They don't have much time left to accomplish it, but they will (wrongly, of course) feed off the events of yesterday to do so now.

They want to delegitimize his presidency and put a permanent mark on it, as the next step will be to prosecute the president and persecute his supporters by cutting them out of polite society. They want to memorialize Trump as an enemy to the regime. Also a show of strength.

Don't underestimate how important this is to them. And they will convert the idiotic stuff from yesterday into rocket fuel for the task. But yesterday will also serve to justify the coming purge. One can see that happening already.
