LOCKDOWN THREAD TO SHARE WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT CONVINCED.

If this thread saves even one life by changing a few minds then I’m happy to live with any resulting abuse.

First important to say that nobody likes lockdown…

1/
But good to see most people understand its necessary & support it [remember Twitter is not representative!]
https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1346493355795107843?s=20

& want it to have happened sooner: https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1346493360954109953?s=20

2/
Also important to note that lockdown could have been avoided with much earlier actions, see all of this thread: https://twitter.com/timcolbourn/status/1344628812131266560?s=20

3/
But we need it now because hospitals are overloaded with Covid patients meaning all hospital care suffers.
https://twitter.com/rupert_pearse/status/1346524635232423943?s=20

4/
This problem is compounded by very high staff absences due to being sick with Covid: https://twitter.com/ShaunLintern/status/1346929272066363396?s=20

5/
The remaining staff –too few for the number of patients– are under incredible pressure & risk burn out. Under these circumstances it is very difficult to maintain good quality of care. https://twitter.com/BBCFergusWalsh/status/1346919194546343939?s=20

6/
More from the frontline: https://twitter.com/Dr2NisreenAlwan/status/1346540842161467395?s=20

7/
Given hospital inpatients numbers will continue to rise for at least 2 weeks after lockdown like in late March-April, London hospitals in particular -even with ‘surge’ capacity- are likely to run out of beds: https://twitter.com/ballouxfrancois/status/1346939646660419586?s=21

8/
This is a truly terrifying prospect, and remember there are already insufficient staff and many are close to burn out (see above).

9/
Still not convinced? See here and sources within. With NHS overload lockdown will save many lives on balance.

[avoiding lockdown with much earlier action would have been even better for health & economy though see tweet 3 above]

10/
_Still_ not convinced? This is a great article from a prominent lockdown sceptic who supports this lockdown:

11/
Please share this thread with anyone you know who needs convincing about the severity of the situation and doubts how bad it will get without lockdown now (yes, including those with yellow smiley faces, especially if you know them personally)

12/
We can only hope the current lockdown is sufficient to shrink the epidemic despite it being driven by a more infectious variant & there being so many exceptions compared to the first lockdown.

13/
Assuming the lockdown does shrink the epidemic, due to lags from infection-->hospitalisation-->death
the next 2 weeks are still going to get worse. Hold tight and we will get through this.
