For those expressing “shock” at yesterday’s ransacking of the U.S. Capitol, think back.
Think back to @realDonaldTrump tweeting “LIBERATE Michigan” and then voicing approval as armed mobs assaulted the Capitol building in Lansing, Michigan.
Think back to his language & actions during racial protests this summer. Think back to his direction to the Proud Boys during the first Presidential debate: “stand back and stand by.” Think back to his description of QAnon followers as “patriots who don’t like child pornography.”
Think back to his ceaseless mantra: “the only way we lose this election is if it’s rigged.” And now think about his words and actions since Nov 7. @realDonaldTrump has been inciting his supporters for a very long time.
When he told his supporters to gather in Washington on Jan 6, "march to the Capitol" and overturn a “stolen election,” this latest and most dangerous assault on our democratic institution and processes was inevitable.
When people will not speak up when the unacceptable and the indefensible occur, when they rationalize their silence for political purposes, when they ignore the principles for which they claim to stand for the sake of a short-term win, then they are also culpable.
Republican officials and Republicans everywhere must finally repudiate Donald Trump and excise him from the Republican Party.
And Cabinet members and elected officials everywhere must always be willing to speak truth, even when it is inconvenient; to stand for principle, even when it is politically perilous; and to act as necessary when action is required.
At 11am today, I'll be addressing this in more detail on @CNBC
