In December, Angelica Choc, widow of murdered Indigenous Q’eqchi Authority Adolfo Ich, faced Mynor Padilla in a Puerto Barrios court. Padilla was the head of security for Canada’s Hudbay Minerals in Guatemala when Adolfo was killed on Sept. 27, 2009.

German Chub was watching a soccer game nearby when Adolfo was murdered. Under the direction of Padilla, Hudbay Minerals Security opened fire on bystanders. German, a young father, was shot & left paralyzed. He also faced Padilla in court in December.
That same day, Alejandro Acte Coc was injured when Padilla, & the Hudbay Minerals security he oversaw, opened fire on members of the Las Nubes community in opposition to the illegal implementation of the nickel mine in Q’eqchi ancestral territory.

In December 20, Padilla, a former military colonel, faced retrial on homicide & injury charges after 2017 ruling that absolved him of all charges was overturned following an appeal filed by prosecutors & CICIG. He is represented by some of most powerful lawyers in Guatemala.
On January 6, 2021 a new judge accepted Padilla’s admission of guilt & sentenced him for homicide of Adolfo Ich & causing injury to German Chub. It took 12 years for Guatemalan criminal justice system to get to this point, & only after strong national & intl support for case.
