As someone who’s studied late-Reconstruction era violence against elected officials & newly-elected multi-racial govts in the South this violent white backlash is all too predictable, & yet I find myself after a sleepless night terrified it’s playing out before us in real time.
This is FAR from over, so do not expect to return to “business as usual,” although I know many of you will try to make us “move on.” Just watch what happens next. More terror, more obstruction, more death. We are not in the clear, and this is no time to be complacent.
White supremacy is the most “American” thing about this country. It will continue to be for as long as the white power establishments & our racist & classist institutions remain in place as they are.
A lawless & reckless president has broadcasted his EVERY move. White supremacy groups & white extremists have broadcasted their EVERY move. Yet, people are sitting here dumbfounded at yesterday’s events.
So far this has not been a “peaceful transition of power,” subverting all “norms.”
When the next administration comes in, there is no time to relax. The organized network of violent extremists is growing & white supremacy shows up in many ways, incl. “this is not who we are” — which is a rejection of reality & lack of acknowledgment of our past & present.
Please stop pedaling the narrative that this is just a small minority of people acting out. We live in a culture of white supremacy that allows insurrection & mass violence to go unchecked & unpunished. White people understand that well.
Also, stop spreading the lie that law enforcement was unprepared. Law enforcement have historically aided incidents of violence, esp. when it involves the disenfranchisement of black and brown people. You already know the deal, don’t feed ahistorical narratives.
