As I reflect on yesterday, among the most tragic things for me as a Christian is the way the cross & Jesus saves banners were misused. Jesus resolves to go to the cross in the garden & then almost immediately has to tell Peter to put his sword down.
He asks Peter how the salvation of the world can be accomplished by violence instead of the cross.
“Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, & he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?””
Matt 26:53-54
Matt 26:53-54
Then when Jesus stands before Pilate he says my kingdom is not like the world’s kingdoms. If it were, they’d be fighting right now. No, Christ’s kingdom is inaugurated by a cross.
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
John 18:36
John 18:36
The cross and the declaration that “Jesus saves” are the most precious things in my life. They are my only hope and the only hope of the world. Please don’t abuse them as symbols for force and violence.
