This is a very interesting discussion. As much as I intensely oppose Trump, I don't think we should be trying to discredit him by assigning a psychiatric diagnosis to him. I have three main reasons for this: https://twitter.com/matthewrbroome/status/1346984659985567745
1. It reinforces the assumption that a psychiatric diagnosis invalidates a person's agency, which is both untrue and harmful to people suffering from mental illnesses;
2. Attributing his behaviour to a disorder risks drawing attention away from the moral and political reasons why his behaviour is so abhorrent. Instead of trying to discredit him with psychiatry, we'd do better to discredit him on these moral and political grounds;
3. Diagnosis is not just an epistemic or classificatory exercise, but is itself a medical intervention, much like administering a treatment. Accordingly, the decision to assign a diagnosis should be constrained by the same ethical principles that constrain the decision to treat.
