Some thoughts on product management for African/Nigerian PMs

1. Don’t get caught in the certificate hype at the expense of hands on experience. Product management courses are great, and help expose you to principles and concepts, but they don’t replace hands on experience.
2. Getting hands on experience in today’s market is tough because, well most times you’re required to already have some experience. Some things to consider/do
2a. Find a few companies who are doing cool things you’d like to be a part of, how would you make the product better? Send them your thoughts.
2b. At your current job, take on a new project, make friends with that engineer or senior PM, ask how you can help, show a keen interest.
2c. The underlying theme is to show curiosity and to put yourself out there. Chief Keef said it best “closed mouths don’t get fed on this boulevard”
3. Technical skills are great, but soft skills are greater. Soft skills like effective communication, writing clearly, being emotionally intelligent and self aware will help you more in your career.
