Effects of disasters and climate change are unequal. Differences by gender remain under-explored. Matt Gibson, Lynn Sunn and I use over two decades of an individual level panel of time-use data from China to note important differences. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jebo.2020.10.016 0/4 https://twitter.com/WBG_Climate/status/1346932084087152645
1/ Heat reduces overall labor supply in China. But heat reduces work time by female farmers more than it does for male farmers. There is no evidence to suggest substitution of work within households.
2/ Heat has even larger effects on labor supply to home production by females than it does on males.
3/ Heat has huge implications for time spent on child care - a day above 80F reduces time spent on child care by 29%. Adaptation (through cooling technologies) makes most of this effect disappear. (Keep in mind adaptation access is unequal).
