Morning, Twitter. Going to be a different kind of thread today. We try to keep this at least a little light even as we get you the news of what happened, which has certainly been dark much of the time. But we don't have any jokes today and they'd seem glib and wrong, anyway.
An angry, pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol yesterday. They did so to try to stop the formal proceedings to certify a fair and free election. That is, by definition, an insurrection. That is what happened in America yesterday.
The images and stories feel surreal. And we owe a thank you to all the journalists who stayed right where they stood and documented what happened. They are not anyone's enemies. They are your friends, family and neighbors and they take their jobs seriously. And some days...
...Days like yesterday, they risk their lives to bring you this news. The least we can do is pass it on accurately. So here it is.
The insurrection was unsuccessful. Joe Biden's victory in a free and fair election was confirmed by Congress early this morning. https://www.pressherald.com/2021/01/07/biden-win-confirmed-after-pro-trump-mob-storms-u-s-capitol/
But there were great costs. 4 people are dead after President Trump incited the mob to storm the Capitol. https://www.pressherald.com/2021/01/06/congress-set-to-confirm-bidens-electoral-win-over-trump/
And the president should face charges for it, @BillNemitz writes. https://www.pressherald.com/2021/01/06/bill-nemitz-stop-that-man-he-just-committed-a-crime/
“This is the president of the United States not accepting the peaceful of transfer of power and inciting a riot,” Maine Rep. @chelliepingree said. https://www.pressherald.com/2021/01/06/pingree-this-doesnt-happen-its-america/
”The words of a president matter, no matter how good or bad that president is,” President-elect @JoeBiden said. “At their best, the words of a president can inspire. At their worst, they can incite.” https://www.pressherald.com/2021/01/06/biden-calls-trump-mob-action-unprecedented-assault-on-democracy/
