/6 The West faces a perfect storm. 1. It has failed on the pandemic; a systemic failure of liberal democracy; 2. Its economies are mired in deep recession, while China's races ahead; 3. And now, as we can see, the US is facing its worst political crisis since the Civil War.
/6 I have argued that 2020 will be seen as the year of the Great Transition, when the majority of the world's population come to view China as the new global leader. The breakdown of the US political system will greatly accelerate that process.
/6 The nature of the US political crisis has been greatly underestimated, its causes very profound. The country is divided down the middle, hopelessly polarised and its system of government paralysed. The fundamental question is: what are the underlying causes of this situation
/6 America has been in decline since the 1980s, dramatically since 2008. For four decades half the population has suffered falling or stagnant living standards. Inequality has reached the levels of the 1930s if not earlier. The American Dream is over.
/6 For virtually its entire history America has been on the rise. It has never known anything different. That era is over. America is destined to become much less important. It is rapidly being replaced as the world's No 1 power by China.
/6 The Western establishment is unable to come to terms with what can only be described as the end of the West as we have known it; they are clinging to the past, in denial of the present, and living in fear of a very different future. We are witnessing a profound paradigm shift
