Why so many European media report a “coup” is understandable: Unlike the US, most European countries don’t have constitutional structures and institutions that would survive a populist taking over the executive office.
Trump “achieved" remarkably little, leaving very few irreparable changes outside of a Republican tax reform. The system, safeguards, division of power worked. When the populists leave European capitals (if ever), some of their legacy will last for decades.
Whereas in Europe, we’ve seen exit from a political union, Politicisation of judicial branch incl lower courts, prosecution of political enemies, nationalisation of private assets, weakening free speech, media freedoms and other fundamental rights.
I’m genuinely not sure (and leave to other to speculate) whether France would survive a President Le Pen, at least not without rebooting the republic afterwards.
