Joao Cancelo's mother- Filomena was a constant in his life.She took him everyday to training and matches when he was a kid.She was his greatest fan and sacrificed her own life for Joao. Naturally Cancelo had a really close bond with his mom as a child.
But things turned upside down in his life in 2013 when he,his brother and his mom were involved in a car accident driving along a motorway near Lisbon.He and his brother survived with minor injuries but his mother wasn't so lucky,she died.
Cancelo just 18 at that time and was playing for Benfica B.He found the death of his mother a tough pill to swallow. In a touching tribute on Facebook he wrote ,"You are my life, without you nothing makes sense. Rest in peace,Mom."
As time went by Cancelo got more motivated to succeed in his footballing career for his mother if not for anyone else.He broke into the Benfica team a year later and from then on his career went uphill.He had successful spells in Inter, Valencia and Juventus ,and now Man City.
Every time he steps on the pitch he looks upto the heavens and everytime he scores he celebrates by looking upto the heavens to dedicate it to his late mother
He writes " #mommyblessme" at the end of every one of his Instagram and Facebook posts too
