A lot of the history of social movements can be told through appropriation of tactics from egalitarian to authoritarian movements. Street protest, building occupations, denial of service attacks. We might need to pay more attention to the Yippies & media spectacle in this story. https://twitter.com/elisethoma5/status/1347052842419245058
The story would include Andrew Breitbart’s perhaps clumsy appropriation and reformulation of critical theory to conclude that “politics is downstream from culture,” which @leifweatherby has written about: https://hedgehogreview.com/blog/infernal-machine/posts/politics-is-downstream-from-culture-part-2-cultural-marxism-or-from-hegel-to-obama
We also need to pay more attention to the Black Power movement and building occupations in this story, and to armed demonstrations at legislatures.

I kept thinking of these 1967 images today, but there’s perhaps more contrast than continuity. The Panthers weren’t breaking any laws, and they were intentional and disciplined.
But while they were strikingly unsuccessful in their immediate goal of lobbying against gun control, they projected an oppositional image which contributed to later recruiting and organizing.
