Thread on the imperfect nature of democracy and its shortcomings..

In the strictest sense of the term, democracy is not the rule of the people but the rule of the majority

For the last 200 years, the west was able to sustain democracy and deify it as the perfect political system
It is true that democracy in the west has ensured the smooth transition of power from one political group to another

The reason for this smooth transition was its largely homogenous population, not divided much on ethnic, religious or racial lines
In diverse societies, the system becomes unstable as the social group in the majority inevitably assumes power making the others feel 'left out'

Eg: The US attempt to install democracy in the middle east terribly failed as the population was highly divided on sectarian lines
In diverse India, democracy has been fascinatingly sustained for long through political consociationalism, i.e. the sharing of power between different religious, ethnic and caste groups

(Not that I agree with or appreciate this system in any way)
Democracy has sustained well in west and some nations of East Asia lately due to their largely homogeneous population

The recent unrest in the US reveals the fragile nature of democracy as the mere division of the population on ideological lines has resulted in so much violence
If an otherwise homogeneous population with 'strong institutions' is faced with so much problem in upholding democracy

Imagine what many nations with diverse populations go through in upholding the system as is frequently imposed on them..
