(1/7) Going to be researching $OPRA more these next few weeks. They're most well known for their web browser application, but what interests me about this company is their portfolio of various fintech and consumer apps that are focused on emerging markets
(2/7) Nigeria, Indonesia, and India are key focus geographies. Haven't fully fleshed out research yet, but here's my initial take. At $1B equity value and almost zero debt, OPRA is basically a cheap call option on emerging markets tech growth. Also company is profitable.
(3/7) Their prime assets consist of a Nigerian fintech company (Opay), a microfinance institution (Nanobank), a social media app with ~50M MAUs (Starmaker), and an AI news platform (Opera News). There are also investments in sports betting, fintech, and gaming with potential.
(4/7) I don’t expect that every single one of their projects will pan out. But they’re at the intersection of two mega-trends (emerging markets and tech) and there’s enough evidence to suggest that at least a few of their products have a durable competitive edge + whitespace.
(5/7) For example, Opay (minority stake) in Nigeria has 80% mkt share in processing bank transfers among mobile money operators. Transaction volume up 285% from 1/20 to 11/20. Expanding to other countries in '21 and adding features like remittance support and lending.
(6/7) Opera News is now at 219M MAUs, up ~30% YoY. Best comp to this product I can find is Toutiao (China - $140-180B valuation). Most of user base is in Africa & Asia. Good reviews. With more users, expect platform will become more attractive to advertisers.
(7/7) As with other long-term plays, think this comes down to competitive edge (or lack of) which still needs more research. Seems interesting and huge potential TAM. Will provide updates as I learn more. Any initial thoughts?
