Everyone keeps marveling at the ease with which a mob took over the Capitol, as if it's a question of failed infrastructure or procedure. But in a way it's related to the same fundamental flaw by much of the media for 5+ years: it was just a massive failure of imagination.
This is not to deny that there's not a component of inherent racial bias: when BLM comes to town, the white imagination takes flight with ease. That's why kevlar helmeted troops can be stacked on the Capitol steps in formation.
But not so for these Trump rallies, which really just look more or less like the Tea Party in 2009.
Nobody ever asked the question of "what if they just all... start coming in?" in the same way that nobody ever asked, "What if he... just does it?" (in regards to one of the many many norms Trump broke, and for which we're still struggling to make him accountable in any way)
In both instances it's the simple failure of imagination of what the right and its enablers will simply DO that caused paralysis, confusion, and essentially collapse
