Those Trump enablers who have expressed surprise at today's insurrection remind me of the scene in Casablanca where Captain Renault proclaims he is shocked there is gambling at Rick's Bar right before quietly accepting his winnings. It was always going to come down to this.
For 4 years, greedy politicians, business people, and media personalities have benefited from a Faustian pact with Trump.
To get what they wanted, be it conservative judges, deregulation, lower taxes, or higher ratings they have looked the other way -
willing to ignore his litany of horrors - convinced that the ends justify the means; that truth, integrity, decency, & even democracy are a cheap commodity worth sacrificing at the alter of their ambitions. I only hope the horror of today will remind us just how wrong they were.
I hope that from the ashes of today we are reminded that there is more that unites us than divides us, that for the sake of ourselves and our children we MUST come together and work together in order to form the more perfect union we all hope for.
