Just a quick note from an American in #HongKong where, in June 2019, protesters also stormed the legislature.

Note that, tactics/methods aside, I support the goals of the HK protesters, and oppose those of the MAGA idiots in DC right now.
There'd been a huge march on 6/9. Lots of momentum for pro-democracy/anti-Beijing activists. Then on 6/12, a much smaller (still large) # of protesters stormed & entered the LegCo.

I went to bed that night thinking, oh well, that'll be the end of the democracy movement here...
Then on 6/16, there was an even huger march. Probably 2 million people (out of 7-8 million who live here).

And, obviously, protest activities continued after that. Fueled, I think, by increasing police violence toward the protesters. (& by the events of 7/21/ and 8/31).
All of which is to say that we don't know what the repercussions of MAGA storming the capitol will be. "They've gone too far & now moderates will disavow them" is one possible reaction, but far from inevitable.
Nor do we know if the general police leniency toward the rioters in DC was an efficient/effective approach. (It's not an excuse for police violence toward BLM/people of color to point out that it is *also* inefficient and tends to escalate tensions/violence).
