I avoid politics on twitter. I don't attack GOP/republicans/conservatives as such-plenty are awesome people and awesome leaders. Criticizing a wannabe despot and calling out a bumbling coup attempt for what it is, isn't "partisan." And the part of the GOP with a backbone agrees.
/ a little less than half this country identifies as republican. Those people include people smarter and kinder than me, including family members and colleagues. We can debate politics. I'm happy to draw a line at supporting the destruction of America's constitutional democracy
/ that's not left vs right. It's not democrat vs republican. Several former GOP presidents and many GOP congressmen, senators, and local leaders vocally and openly condemned Trump at every stage. Trumpism isn't conservativism, or right-wing.
/ Trump was a democrat for most of his life and donated to Hillary Clinton's senate run. He's not right wing, he's not conservative. He switched to GOP only because he saw an easier path to power. He's a bumbling kleptocrat with no ideals, no morals, who rose on birtherism.
/ the information bubbles of today's social media age made it easy for people to be radically misinformed about even the most basic facts. This is a president who could look into the camera and claim he didn't say what we saw him say on camera last week....and people believed.
/ but beyond that - Trump tapped into a host of angers and fears. The premise of "MAGA" was that the lower and middle classes of America are suffering for reasons they don't fully understand. Who's to blame? Immigrants? Obama? The "PC police?" Technology?
/ Trump promised solutions ranging from a wall to keep out immigrants, to tougher negotiations with foreign powers that were supposedly ripping Americans off. Many Americans recognized something is wrong, and Trump was their rorschach blotter - anything they needed him to be.
/ he rose to power at a time when Americans' confidence in our institutions was at all time lows, for good reasons! The left took to the streets to protest police. Students protested academia. Elites were targeted for "cancellation." This wasn't just a phenomena of the right
/ the underlying causes of Trumpism remain. And the threat of Trumpism remains. Maybe the next "Trump" will be more competent, more capable, more subtle. This isn't over unfortunately. America faces a very tough transition period.
