It was always going to come to this. Always. From the moment Trump refused to divest his financial interests, this presidency was about him and not about America. And so very many people have been complicit in this assault on democracy. So very many people in comfortable places.
There are the Trump appointees who whisper to reporters that THEY are secretly protecting America. There are the reporters who print their anonymous lies. There's a newspaper that said I was out of my "lane" when I called on Trump to divest his conflicting assets.
There are the book publishers paying fortunes to former Trump appointees. The newspapers that run their op eds. The TV hosts who put Kellyanne Conway and other members of this wretched mob on TV, amplifying their lies. The Republican members of Congress who voted not to impeach.
There are the treacherous members of Congress who spread lies about the election that they knew to be untrue for political gain, leading to the desecration of the Capitol building and the death of one of the attackers. That blood will forever stain their hands.
There are those who saw an opportunity to for power, whose ambition led them to join the Trump administration despite their misgivings. There are those who facilitated child kidnapping and torture. There are those who plotted new forms of cruelty for its own sake.
There are the appointees who thought it was cute to ambiguously flash the "white power" symbol in pictures. The relatives or neighbors who voted for Trump because they (wrongly) thought it would help their 401(k) accounts and didn't give a damn about who it hurt.
There are the well-to-do types who, even know, will welcome these villains at their fancy cocktail parties and other events. There are the commentators who tut-tutted and said those sounding the alarm were being dramatic. There are those who shrugged and looked the other way.
There are the outright criminals. The cowards. The milquetoast objectors. There is the "both sides" crowd. There are people whose vigorous objections could have made a difference. There are the people who just didn't care. The apathetic. The aggrieved. And the carnival barkers.
So many comfortable people have contributed so much to this assault on democracy. There is plenty of blood for all of your hands. There is blame. There is shame. Not that you'll feel the shame. But it will be with you forever like a dirty aura hovering around your tainted souls.
