For those saying "this only happens in banana republics", remember the role of Americans in creating those "banana republics" in Latin America. Have a look at the history of United Fruit Company (and others) with deep ties in the US Government at mid (20th) century...
...and the roles they played in destabilizing and replacing the governments of those countries, as it pleased them.
Their influence on US Government policy continued all the way up to the end of the century when they effectively lobbied for the destruction of the preferential access small Caribbean states had for their bananas in the European Union.
