Punchbowl PM: Hello, from the U.S. Capitol. At the moment of this writing, we are safe. But make no mistake: we are under siege here, and so is America.
A mob -- not protestors but an angry mob -- breached the United States Capitol after President Donald Trump urged them to march from the White House down Pennsylvania Avenue as Congress was beginning the process of certifying Joe Biden’s victory.
They pushed onto the guarded complex, breached barricades, pushed past police and later smashed windows to gain entrance to the heavily fortified Capitol.
They shoved past and knocked down Capitol Police officers, marched through the Capitol’s marble halls, detonating smoke bombs, waving Confederate flags, brandishing Trump memorabilia and stoking confrontations with those who tried to stop them.
They got into the heavily guarded House and Senate chambers, took photos in its chairs and eventually forced Capitol Police officers to draw their weapons. One person was shot, according to the Washington Post’s deep, and impressive lead all.
Police locked down the entire Capitol complex, beginning with the outer office buildings, and eventually the main building, where the House and Senate meet.
We — me and @bresreports -- were locked in a room in the Capitol for hours. And, as of this writing, we were in a secure room with cafeteria workers, journalists, maintenance staff and other employees.
The nation’s leadership was immediately moved to shelter: Speaker Nancy Pelosi was escorted to a safe location, as were other congressional leaders and their aides. Senators and members of the House were taken to rooms with a heavy police presence.
The Capitol was swarming with law enforcement. Pelosi requested the National Guard, and Virginia and Maryland sent its troops. In the Capitol, we saw and were told the following agencies responded: Capitol Police, FBI, Park Police, ATF and D.C. police.
