Fascism does not begin with genocide; that is where it can end. As a German, I have been taught that all my life because that is where it did end in my country of birth. Fascism does begin with authoritarian leaders who seek to erase democracy and the democratic process. #Trump
So never forget that. And then keep doing all you can to take a stand for democracy. Trump’s America may feel like an unexpected place for a coup of this kind, but, if anything, that makes today’s events an even starker warning for us about the need to take that stand. Every day.
Why? Because Trump isn’t alone. From Europe to South America, too many others leaders are playing their version of the Trump-card, scratching the fascism surface. Their main tools too are sowing division; inciting hate against others; and emboldening of the far right.
They too use these tools to hollow out democracy. They may not all have been as extreme as Trump, but scratch they all did. Many did more than that. So whether you appreciate the use of the f-word or not: we are where we are. I urge you to keep taking that stand. /end
