Honest question: Why is the DC riot being viewed differently by most commentators than the riots that happened this summer? I don't understand how someone w a principled take on this can also take the other side of the coin on the riots 6 months ago? 1/n
I'm talking about people flipping on either side. For people downplaying the violence during the summer, I would argue that destroying communities causes much more harm to society than storming a govt building 2/n
For people downplaying the riot today, I don't understand how the principle of Rule of Law & the importance of not allowing mob rule to overtake democratic processes don't apply to this as well? 3/n
I presume the protest in DC had more ppl than the ~1k people that stormed the building - why isn't this considered a "mostly peaceful" event w a few ppl that don't represent the group? Or if this shouldnt be considered that, why *were* the events this summer framed like that? 4/n
Is it the symbolism of what this interrupted today? Then I wonder why isn't the (actual) destruction from this summer and how it affected people viewed with the same weight 5/n
Is it the natural tendency to retreat into partisanship? I don't understand that since I would bet money that an overwhelming majority doesn't support the violence/destruction, even if it was done "by their own side." 6/n
Is anyone actually interested in renouncing this behavior, or do people not care just as long as it wasn't "their side" that did it and they are able to blame the "other side" for the devolution? 7/n
Do people that have accepted or condoned the pathetic leadership by governors and mayors for the past year not see the hypocrisy of demanding Trump to condemn this? Do people that were pissed by the pathetic govs and mayors not see the same behavior in Trump? 8/n
I understand that its a fool's errand to try and expect rationality, even though we all claim to be more fair and rational than the next person - I just don't understand how people claiming that can keep a straight face while doing so -- 9/9
