The Capitol has been stormed. A woman was shot and is in critical condition. Devices have been identified as bombs on Capitol grounds. Officers, civilians, and reporters have been injured. Democratic process has been interrupted.

This insurrection is indicative of massive issues that we, as a country, have failed to address for years. I recognize the situation I’m growing up in, and I’m tired of the talking points people my age have heard for years.

“Children are the future of this country”, and “This country is the greatest place on earth”. Senators, representatives, and others: I agree, but these words mean nothing without action that promotes equity and falls in line with your duty to work for US citizens.

I’ve seen an incompetent administration incite violence, division, and nationalism. I’ve seen countless opportunities to improve our country shot down along party lines. Children are absolutely the future of this country, and

if our representatives today are unwilling to make change, we will. I’m 17. If you’re around my age and you don’t find any of this concerning on a massive scale, you should. This is not the way our country should behave at the level of citizens or government, and
