maybe it’s time to reflect on why far-right Christian nationalists who think Black people’s votes are illegitimate identify strongly with Israel & make defending occupation of Palestinian land without citizenship or equality a core part of their political & religious ID https://twitter.com/noa_landau/status/1346920003778588672
whenever I stumble on a racist far-right MAGA Twitter account it is absurdly common for Israel to be so central to their political and religious identity that they mention it in their Twitter bio, next to something about their love of Jesus.
is there another country whose national flag regularly appears at unrelated Trump & far-right rallies along with the US flag and the Confederate flag? even when there are no Israelis or Jews present? the Israel *means* something to them & it’s necessary to think about what & why
whatever Jews’ personal feelings about Israel in the abstract, this is something that too many of us avoid thinking about or grappling with and it’s overdue.
the current structure, policies & gov’t of the State of Israel deeply resonate with these people (many deeply antisemitic) because they see it as both a bludgeon vs. the Muslim world & as ideological support for their ideas about demographic control of political power.
obviously I’m not saying that’s the only reason people have connections to Israel and many people have complicated or ambivalent relationships with it, but this is something a lot of people should think about and sit with, no matter how uncomfortable it is.
since people keep yelling at me - I’m not prescribing any one thing that you need to conclude or providing a comprehensive answer or suggesting that we’re responsible for these people. I’m literally just saying that this happens a lot & it’s worth looking at & thinking about why
