I'm gonna say this about Trump's video telling folks to go home--he helped create this moment of mob violence. It reminds me of Gen. Robt. E. Lee after the Civil War, when he dismissed the movement to memorialize the Confederacy, which he helped lead & sustain over 4 years 1/
True, Lee said "I think it wiser . . . not to keep open
the sores of war." But the Lost Cause, like today's Trumpism, thrived on "the sores of war." 2/
As I write in No Common Ground, Lee's sentiments (and even Trump's in weakly calling off today's mob), did not matter. The Lost Cause no longer belonged to Lee; Lee belonged to the Lost Cause. 3/
In many ways, this modern day Lost Cause no longer belongs to Trump & these supporters will carry it forward long after he's gone. 4/
