I don’t usually get into things like this on Twitter, but this is annoying me because I’ve worked my nuts off this year!

This month is the first time where there are no face to face practicals at Cardiff Met. So many people have worked extremely hard to ensure we can safely deliver pracs. I have taught classes of 8 (normally teach a group of 24). This means 4x the delivery time each week

Positives of online delivery have come from this. Video lectures are well received by students. Allows them to cover material in their own time. We’ve added additional “touch points” for students to ask questions live. How many students take up this opportunity is up to them. 3/
Asynchronous content for students has offered them more learning opportunities than ever. Students have been directed to podcasts, conference presentations, and blogs (on top of video lectures by staff) that maybe lecturers wouldn’t have used before. 4/
Online seminars have replaced classroom based seminars. These have been the most disadvantaged sessions. However, students don’t help themselves. I can count on 1 hand the number of students who turn their cameras on. Doesn’t make for a very interactive learning environment.. 5/
We’ve designed our own internal virtual placements so students can get practical experience while we can’t use external clubs and NGB’s. Students are usually mentored by practitioners. Guess who’s mentoring the students through it this year? You guessed it... lecturing staff! 6/
Accommodation fees are not for me to debate (but our students have been on campus every week so kind of need to be here!). I appreciate the full “uni experience” has been hugely impacted with no sport and socialising. 7/
However, questioning whether tuition is worth paying for just because some things are online is doing a massive disservice to lecturers. We have worked extremely hard to maintain the student experience in the current climate. 8/
This has caused more work than ever for lecturers, and if students and external people can’t appreciate that then thats up to them

Do people really think I like sitting in my office talking to a screen? We’d all like to be teaching as normal, but it’s not possible at the moment. It’s also not Universities fault how badly this pandemic has been dealt with, but that’s for another day! 10/10
I should also add that a number of students have been very grateful of what lecturers have done to try and maintain their experience, understanding that most things are out of our hands!
Final one on this. Number of students are saying they have no issues with lecturers, but the Uni. What do you think happens if the Uni doesn't have money from fees? Do you think they will sell off that lab equipment? Or sell the new swimming pool? No. Staff will be let go...
