Next potential #SWFC manager analysis thread is René Weiler🇨🇭The latest foreign manager on the bookies list. Most recently at Al Ahly SC in Egypt but resigned in October after winning the league & a cup, leaving the team in semis of CAF Champions League (to be with family).(1/14)
Weiler has 30 years of experience in football - 20 as a manager/backroom staff member across 4 countries (Switzerland, Belgium, Egypt & Germany). In terms of formations, he primarily plays 4-2-3-1 but has used bits of 4-1-4-1 & 4-3-3, his formations based on phases. #SWFC (2/14)
Weiler's style of play is mixed. He's quoted as saying his primary playstyle depends on available players qualities. However he's strong on discipline and tactical thought and very much expects new players to adapt to his tactical system (see Sven Kums being dropped) #SWFC (3/14)
At Nürnberg Weiler's team were strong on the attack (two goals per match in his final season) but defensively solid (a record 41 goals conceded). At Anderlecht it was a very different story as he played somewhat "pragmatic" attritional football to the dismay of fans. #SWFC (4/14)
To give an idea of tactics - at Anderlecht, Weiler utilised tactical fluidity between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 approach. His 4-3-3 typically has 2 holding players and a no.10 which can pivot into a 4-2-3-1 upon wide players dropping back when not in possession. #SWFC (5/14)
The stats:
*Weiler's career Points Per Game is 1.75 which is above Bruce/Carlos.
*An impressive career win percentage of 52%. But massively skewed by his Al Ahly SC wins (34/44).
*Goals For/Against is 737:518 which demonstrates his keep it tight at the back policy.
#SWFC (6/14)
The good:
*Weiler has winning credentials - 2 cup wins, 2 title wins and a promotion in last 10+ years.
*He has some solid football experience in the Jupiler Pro League and 2. Bundesliga.
*Can operate as a Manager, Head Coach or Director of Football.
#SWFC (7/14)
The good cont':
*As a result of managing low budget teams Weiler has made sensible low cost transfers - Behrens, Leibold, Margreitter, Sepsi and Möhwald at Nürnberg.
*He's played some part in blooding young players at Anderlecht - Acheampong Dendoncker Tielemans etc.
#SWFC (8/14)
The good cont'
*Weiler could well be the first foreign manager linked to #SWFC (that i've covered) that wouldn't need a drastic squad upheaval in order to achieve his aims on paper. His flexible approach means he will be able to utilise our traditional 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 defenders. (9/14)
The bad:
*Rene Weiler's career is arguably on a downward turn since 2017. Since managing in Belgium he's regressed to Switzerland & Egypt. Big fish in small pond? Rumours of larger job offers came to nothing - Leeds 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Young Boys 🇨🇭Maccabi Tel Aviv 🇮🇱 Al-Shabab FC 🇸🇦 #SWFC (10/14)
The bad cont':
*Weiler's bulk of experience as a coach/player is in Switzerland. Whilst the Super League isn't bad experience, the Swiss Challenge League is. Concerned that he's realistically only spent 3 years in competitive leagues on par with Championship 🇧🇪&🇩🇪 #SWFC (11/14)
The bad cont':
*Weiler has a history of poor relations at boardroom level. At Anderlecht he was involved in arguments about transfers - notably expensive star signing, Sven Kums, who he rarely played. A recipe for disaster at #SWFC with DC & 3rd party transfer influences? (12/14)
The bad cont':
*Obvious common theme with vast majority of our links... Weiler hasn't managed in England. As always not an automatic disqualification from success (think Daniel Farke) but means he may struggle to hit the ground running. #SWFC (13/14)
Overall Weiler would be a gamble for #SWFC. There is no doubt he's a talented coach and his "pragmatic" approach might mean he can hit the ground running without expensive transfers, but could he work with Chansiri given his previous track record? I'm unsure personally. (14/14)
