HOW THROUGH THE WIRE SHAPED THE CAREER OF KANYE WEST.
On October 23, 2002 an aspiring rapper, Kanye West left the studio early in the morning off very little sleep. He was involved in a serious car accident that shattered his jaw and lead it to be wired shut for six weeks.
“Through the Wire” samples “Through the Fire” by Chaka Khan. This sample is perfect for the song as it shows how Kanye had literally made it through a fire and was able to tell us his story with his jaw wired shut. Hence, the title of the song “Through the Wire.”
In the intro, Kanye says nothing can stop him from rapping, not even his jaw being wired shut. The sample comes in saying “through the fire, for a chance to be with you, I’d rather risk it all.” Kanye shows how he’ll do anything to make it as a rapper and live out his dreams.
In the first verse, Kanye shows us the state he was in shortly after the accident. He was heavily medicated and unable to eat solid foods because of his jaw. He feels bad for his mom and girlfriend as he understands the pain they must be feeling seeing him like this. (CONTINUED)
He ends the verse showing how this accident is proof that god wants him to make it as “he gave him two life lines.” He then goes on to predict that this song would be history in the making, and he was right.
The second verse is taken from Kanye’s perspective while recovering from the accident. He takes the crash as a positive experience and uses it to show how he overcame so much and managed to flip this tragedy into triumph, against all odds.
The car accident made Kanye realize how short life is and that he couldn’t take it for granted anymore. It gave him the push to work on his debut album “The College Dropout” and also helped him adopt the belief that he could overcome any boundary later on his career.
“Through the Wire” is proof that even against all odds, anything is possible if you give it your all. The inspiration, journey and message that Kanye has laid out for us with this song, makes it the greatest debut track of all time.
