truly bizarre to see takes like "tech companies should cut off the streamers" right now
peak content moderation discourse... just turn off their accounts and the problem will go away
these far right movements are claiming victory because they are in physical possession of the united states capitol. and, as demonstrated by their live streams, they were not removed by police. they're still there, right now https://twitter.com/sheeraf/status/1346923853730045954?s=20
in this reaction there's an assumption that the images of this reality only have one downstream effect (far-right recruitment), but this isn't the case. the response is not predetermined and the framing does not come from on high
for instance, recording streams allows decentralized, real-time identification of the people involved, which would not be possible if platforms censored today's events https://twitter.com/defendpdx/status/1346935847212355587
censorship means we wouldn't know that the police opened the gates and let them in https://twitter.com/cevansavenger/status/1346920924310867968
coming back to the question of response and framing, why is the assumption that these images can only serve far-right recruitment, and not, e.g., to solidify resolve to invoke the 14th amendment and remove the senators and representatives who supported today's events?
addendum, here's a thread using footage from those streams and other sources to collect information on the group who entered the senate chamber apparently with a plan to take hostages. i'm glad this work can be done in public. https://twitter.com/jsrailton/status/1347282288854360070
