OK, this thread is dedicated to Donald Trump's Court Jester, Glenn Greenwald, who once upon a time wrote about about the dangers of the unitary executive in this country, not bc it was insightful (he borrows a lot, always), but to highlight that a LOT of people should know better
Whether Trump has been PLANNING this since November 4, Trump has been putting the pieces into place since then -- and he has been testing out the limits of the unitary executive for years.
He has ALSO been buying the loyalty of cops since before he was elected. Know what that buys you? Inaction when you want to launch a coup.
Some other things he tested: What a defense of the capitol would look like, and what chains of command would look like.

There's a reason he fired Mark Esper. He failed that "test."

Indeed, that is The Reason he fired Mark Esper.
Trump was also testing Muriel Bowser's lines of authority this summer. That test made it clear that DC needs to be a state to defend itself.

Too late.
So where we're at is SO LONG AS TRUMP has those lines of authority (and the loyalty purchased over years from cops and mobsters), he will be able to undermine effective responses to this.
As noted: The National Guard personnel that Bowser requested ahead of time but were denied are now headed there under orders from Trump. What will they do?

What will the US Attorney for all of GA do tonight, as similar mobs are converging on the GA capitol?
The states can likely withstand this themselves (though I'm worried abt GA, given the change in US Attorney). But in DC, you have to neutralize Trump's power.
