I’m seeing the word “coup” thrown about again. So let’s go through the coding exercise... 1/n
Is there force involved? At this point, we would probably all concur that there is. 2/n
Are the military or other security forces involved in an attempt to take power? Not at the moment. So not a military coup. 3/n
Was the incident planned and coordinated by a faction of actors currently possessing state power? Does not look like it at the moment but more information could come to light. 4/n
This last bit... coordination within a plan to seize power... is critical. An episode of a protest getting out of control with no institutional backing or plot would not rise to the level of a coup attempt. 5/n
That being said, protests and mutinies can evolve and turn into coups. I’m watching carefully but I do think it’s too early to call this a coup. 6/n
