MY RE:ZERO 2 EPISODE 14 THREAD

Just me rambling about a bunch of nice framing choices, characters and whatnot.
The ride finally starts again, & Otto is here with a harsh dose of reality to welcome us!

Otto's words here strike at a core point of the series & this arc in particular—that is to say Subaru's isolation as he tries to solve things alone, unable to communicate his struggle.
What Subaru needs is to be knocked to his senses—literally—as Otto lays out his character flaws before him. Here, it's Subaru's weakness by himself and refusal to reach out that's being addressed. This display is to show us he's so weak that even a merchant can knock him down.
This is a well-placed eye reflection shot, as Otto sees through Subaru's heart & intentions perfectly, staring directly into his soul as he calls him out.

The gesture of him connecting their hearts is also a good visual depiction of what he's trying to convey to Subaru here.
Naturally, Subaru isn't completely to blame here — his trust in those around him is shaken as his main support throughout this arc turned out to be a manipulator. This scene is not only about trying to get him to stop doing things on his own, but to trust others again as well.
A lot of people remembered the song here — this played in early S1, and if you look at the lyrics you would see how it was written for this specific scene. It's a similar move to AoT's EDs foreshadowing future developments.

The visual direction places Roswaal below Subaru, makes him small and puts him literally inside Subaru's palm, showing how Subaru now seems on top of things.

But the significant thing here is the line "This power isn't even that useful".
That's a big one, coming from Subaru, who used to base his self-worth around his power only. This is the narrative gently telling viewers that it's shifting the focus away from the gruesome death loops. The title card being at the start rather than the end is also significant.
Lastly, this — Subaru & Roswaal are two of the three characters in the show toyed by Fate. Subaru in the form of RbD, and Roswaal through his Gospel instructing him for his desired outcome.

What will happen now that Subaru rejected RbD to take fate into his own hands?
This is pretty important, pertaining to Emilia—this is Subaru admitting that Emilia's issues are for her to solve, without relying on him or Otto. All he can do is encourage her to face her own hardships, without taking them on himself (like by doing the Trials for her).
Just want to take a moment to appreciate the relationship development between these two. Their dynamic is genuine, wholesome and mutually supportive.
Subaru places importance on individual will rather than taking away someone's agency. He wants Ryuzu to talk by herself.

The alternating Ryuzus & Garf's connection to the banished supervisor Shima could explain some inconsistencies, & why Subaru was brought *outside* in EP32…
I talked about Garfiel's abandonment & family issues lampshaded in EP32, & this adds further layers to it all—his actions seem to be deeply connected to his family situation. Right now, Garfiel's only family is Shima, the one who took him out of the Tomb.

They parallel & mutually support each other perfectly. There is a really healthy relationship in the making here.
There's a mistranslated nuance here — Roswaal didn't say HE would thaw the ice, but that "her wish to thaw the ice would be granted".

Anyhow, we finally learn Emilia's reason for wanting the thron — to help her own people in particular. Subaru validating her wish is also great.
Subaru is also pretty smart here — he knows that the one thing that'd make Puck come out is putting Emilia in immediate danger (she never has been throughout Arc 4, always safe inside the Tomb even when the Rabbit came, hence why Puck was never forced to come out).
Puck has always been Emilia's main source of support, her rushing to Subaru as soon as he's gone (look at EP36). She's a weak, dependent person — and she won't grow her own wings if coddled by both Puck & Subaru. This goodbye between father & child is a pivotal moment for Emilia.
Of course, the suddenness of the circumstances, Puck betraying the promise he made in Frozen Bond and Subaru failing to uphold his promise to hold her hand, causes Emilia to lose her trust in everyone, and hide away in the place she knows she'll be isolated in — the graveyard.
This little scene pretty much confirms that Shima is the driving force behind Garfiel's suspicions and actions towards Subaru. I'm kind of sad they cut the stuff that humanizes Garf even more, especially his affectionate banter with her.
The perspectives we're following have changed, and for the first time the viewer is in the dark about Subaru's plotting, following Garfiel along in his confusion — intensified by the camera angle choices in the crystal room.
Subaru and Otto have put together a plan and are wrapping Garfiel around their fingers, acting on the information gathered thus far. Otto is a weak and frail boy, but his presentation in this scene is terrifying — even the Garfiel who once butchered him in another loop...
This was a fantastic start! I'm upset about some cuts but putting those aside, the presentation was sublime, and the only thing I'm lukewarm about was the way they played Straight Bet during the bet scene. I really tried to keep this short but that's a tough undertaking...
