Obviously this is Trump's fault. But the tech platforms are equally at fault. @Twitter @Facebook and the others allow false information to spread through their platforms all because they claim they "are not the arbiters of free speech."
Jack and Zuck only barely began implementing measures to slow the spread of false information once they saw the writing on the wall after the November election. They did it to save their bottom lines, but it was too late for the country.
In Spring 2020 I wrote a 40-page research paper on content moderation (not for fun). Content moderation is largely aimed at keeping the platforms clean. Clean basically means no child porn, torture, or executions because those would render platforms unusable to most people.
These platforms employ an army of lawyers who create policies that allow misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech. Platforms claim they cannot moderate because there is too much content, yet, they can mine massive amounts of our data. Can't, or won't?
Ultimately, the paper was about how a few lawyers dictating global policy, for profit, in a glass room is anti-democratic because yada yada, and what we should or shouldn't do about it pros cons blah blah. Who cares.

No matter what, everyone involved needs to answer for this.
