I am petrified thinking of the custodians, mostly Black and Latinx, who work in the capital who must be petrified of what's going on. Who undoubtedly are the most at risk of harm. So no, this is not terrifyingly exciting, and no, this is not only white folks' business.
I was a college intern in Congress, my freshman summer; it was terribly isolating. I quickly let go of my self-pity thinking of the isolation the custodians must have experienced as long-term workers who received half of the respect I was given because I wore a suit and tie.
They were the only people in the building I maintained respect for. The only folks I greeted every morn on my way in, and the last I spoke to on my way out. My issue is with the leaders of my government, not with the caring people who are forced to clean up after them.
I went through the weak-ass safety training required of all congressional staff and I can promise you that the only folks seen as more disposable (within the safety plan) than the unpaid interns are those custodians. Please keep them in mind.
