These charts show the age bands for COVID-19 hospital admissions in England. They provide clear insight into what the age mix is for COVID-19 patients and also address the question as to whether there have been any recent increases in child admissions due to the new variant. #1
Zoom in to children and it is possible to see that there are more daily admissions for children than in the first wave, both in terms of absolute numbers and in % terms. However they do NOT seem to be adversely affected by the new variant since the % is relatively consistent. #2
Taking a look at London it is possible to see that daily admissions during Dec 2020 closely resemble the first wave in Apr 2020. It is clear that hospital admissions for children have accounted for a consistently low % of daily admissions during Dec 2020 which is good news. #3
Focusing on London children it can be seen that daily admissions are now higher than they were in late Mar / early Apr. Despite the increase during Dec 2020 the new variant does NOT appear to have a disproportionate effect on children. The % in Dec is slightly better then Sep. #4
